2004 - LAUNCHES

Llanddulas - 1930 hrs
36 Knot wind - Force 7 - 3 metre swell


The ALB was called out 1930 hours to attend to the cargo vessel “Arklow Freedom”.  She had electrical failure and was dragging her anchor some 3 1/2 miles from Rhyl and 2 miles off the coast  The Rhyl lifeboat was also launched and both boats stood by until the electrical problems were resolved. The boat then returned to station at 0030 hours.

Conwy Bay - 2015 hrs
26 Knot wind with high sea swell - clear visibility


The ALB was launched at 2015 at the request of the Coastguard to a 21 ft. yacht which was aground between No.2 buoy and the shore  It was believed that one of the crew of two men had been in the water  When the ALB arrived they found only a metre of water so requested the helicopter and Conwy ILB to stand by in case they were required  With considerable skill the coxswain managed to get close enough to the yacht to get a line on board and towed it in to Conwy Marina.  The ALB then returned to Llandudno. The skipper of the yacht was Ken Johnson, a violinist with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra on his way to a concert in Llandudno the following day.

Little Orme - 1430 hrs


The ILB was launched at 1430 to assist with a party of canoeists at Angel Bay.  One girl had sustained a suspected broken leg and had been stabilized by the Coastguard  The ILB attended but the injured girl was taken to hospital by helicopter  The ILB then took the remainder of the party and their canoes to Rhos-on-Sea.

Strong winds


The ALB was launched after the Coastguard received several calls that red flares had been spotted off shore at Rhos-on-Sea  The ALB was launched at 2230 and, along with other boats, searched the area in the vicinity  Nothing was found and the search was called off at 0030 hrs  It appears the siting coincided with a meteor storm.

Llandudno Bay - 1811 hrs
Gale Force 7 - Rain - Failing Light


The Coastguard received a call saying that a fisherman had fallen off the end of Llandudno Pier  The ILB was immediately launched and found the man about 20 yards from the pier  He was suffering from hypothermia and falling in and out of consciousness  He was landed and taken aboard a waiting ambulance at 1825 hrs.

Windy - Good Visibility


The ILB was launched at Llandudno after a call reporting a kite surfer being blown out to sea.  The ILB went out and recovered the kite but it transpired that the owner was on the shore and had never been in the water.  He was, however, extremely grateful to have his kite returned.

West Shore, Llandudno - 1500 hrs approx
Strong Winds


The ILB was taken to the West Shore, Llandudno after receiving intimation that a wind surfer was in difficulties.  On arrival at the scene it was found he was alright so the boat returned to station.

Conwy Bay - 1500 hrs approx.
Very Strong Winds


After receiving a message from the coastguard the ALB was tasked to go to the assistance of the yacht Victoria Conwy 1, the Sailing School yacht, which had suffered engine failure by No.6 buoy.  The ALB set off to launch at West Shore but before reaching there received a message to the effect that the engine had successfully been restarted and the ALB was stood down before being launched.

The ILB launched to a sailing dinghy in difficulties.  The dinghy had turned turtle a couple of times and the crew were becoming extremely exhausted.  The ILB landed one crew member who was suffering from mild hypothermia and exhaustion then returned to the dinghy and towed it and the remaining crew members to the yacht club slip.

West Shore 0945 hrs


The ILB was alerted to the fact that two people were stranded on the sand banks at West Shore.  Before the ILB was launched it was ascertained that the people had managed to get ashore unaided.  The ILB was stood down.

Light Winds - Good Visibility


A boat had dropped anchor by No. 1 buoy and the anchor line became entangled.  The ILB launched to assist and free the vessel.

Llandudno Bay 1800 hrs approx.
Calm - Good Visibility


A call was received by the Coastguard that a woman was adrift in Llandudno Bay.  The ILB was launched and found the woman in a very small toy inflatable dinghy.  When the ILB approached her she threatened "to end it all".  She did have paddles and used them from time to time.  She drifted under the pier and the crew spent more than 30 minutes talking to her and eventually persuaded her to come in to the ILB.  She was then taken to the slipway by the Imperial Hotel and reunited with her partner.  She was checked over by the ambulance crew then both her and her partner were taken by the coastguard officer to their guest house.

The ILB was called out in the afternoon after reports of a dinghy floating out to sea.
The ILB was launched and recovered the empty dinghy and towed it back to the shore
at Rhos-on-Sea

Rough Seas in open water - Gusting Force 7


Person in sea at Rhos-on-Sea.  Ambulance asked for help to bring ashore.
ILB taken by road to Rhos-on-Sea but stood down en route as the person had come back to shore.

Rhos-on-Sea - 1845 hrs
Calm


The ILB was called to Rhos-on-Sea harbour to aid two 16/17 year olds in inflatables who couldn't get back to the shore.  The boat was launched at Llandudno and went round the Little Orme to Rhos-on-Sea.  One of the youths had managed to back ashore but the other was towed back by the ILB and landed at the beach at Rhos-on-Sea.  The ILB was recovered shorter after 1900 hrs.

North West of Great Orme - 1820 hrs

The ALB was launched at 1820 to-day to go to the aid of an 18 metre motor boat with total engine failure 5 miles north west of the Great Orme.  The boat, The Tara, costing £1.2 million was powered by 2 Hamilton water-jets and lost power sailing on extensive sea trials from Carlingford in Northern Ireland to Conwy when all power was lost.  The ALB went to her assistance and towed her into Conwy.  The Tara was built in County Cork for a private owner in Monaco

The ILB was called to Llandudno's West Shore after three adults were spotted on the sand bank.  The three people involved managed to wade to shore and the ILB was stood down

Llandudno West Shore - 1610 hrs
Calm


The ILB was called to Llandudno's West Shore after a senior crew member spotted four adults and three
children (two aged 5 and one aged 2) on the sand bank and attempting to wade to shore pulling and child's inflatable dingy  with the youngest child in it.  The current was too strong for the adults and all seven were brought safely ashore by the ILB

The ILB was called out to search  the area after two phone calls reporting an upturned boat.  After an extensive search nothing was found and it was presumed to be a false alarm and a mooring buoy had been mistaken for an upturned boat.

The ILB was called to Llandudno's West Shore to search for an eight year old child who was reported missing from the beach.  The child was later found in a nearby hotel.

Great Orme - 0130 hrs
Force 5


The ALB was called out in the evening to assist a 23 ft catamaran "Esmeralda" which was taking in
water approximately 12 miles north of the Great Orme and was in danger of sinking.  Lifeboat crew boarded the casualty and used a pump to stabilize the amount of water it was taking on.  The boat was towed back to Llandudno Bay to assess the damage in calmer conditions. It was attempted to two the boat to Conwy but the damage to the catamaran's hull deteriorated even further and it had to beached at Llandudno's West Shore.

Conwy Bay to Point Lynas - 2400 hrs approx.


The ALB was called out to shadow a yacht believed to have been stolen from Conwy.  Flares were being
fired from the yacht and it was considered to be a danger to others so Llandudno ALB was asked to observe and follow at a safe distance.  At Point Lynas the surveillance was taken over by Holyhead lifeboat and the Llandudno lifeboat was stood down.

Blustery


The ILB went to the aid of three canoeists in blustery conditions when one craft lost its spray cover. 
The canoeist left his craft and swam ashore.  The other two canoeists were taken on board the lifeboat and the three canoes towed back to the beach
