The first boathouse in
Llandudno
was
situated close to the Railway Station. This was built in 1860 at
a cost of £147.10/- to house Llandudno's first
lifeboat. In 1904 a new Boathouse was built at a cost of
£1,370.16/1d. This was built in Lloyd Street, the site of
the current boathouse and the first boat to reside there was the
Theodore Price. The location which is in Lloyd Street, is in the
centre
of town, and it was built there to facilitate launching from both the
north and west
shores. The boathouse has been extended over the years to
accommodate the larger replacement boats and has now reached a stage
where no further extensions can be made.
The boathouse provides very little comfort for the crew. The Andy
Pearce is a tight fit and once the landrover and ILB are in the
boathouse there is very little room for manoeuvre. Upstairs the
crew have a narrow landing on which to change into their boat
gear.
The crew room is so small that when all the crew are in the Boathouse
about half of them have to sit on the floor. There is one toilet
in a room which is no larger than a broom cupboard. From the
outside the boathouse is a very attractive building but completely
impracticable for use to-day.
